The Nordic Connection
The Nordic Heritage Museum in Seattle is housed in a former brick lined school house and is especially significant when taking into consideration immigrants to the city from Scandinavian countries such as Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland and Finland. Located in Seattle’s Ballard area which has the highest concentration of Scandinavians the museum acts as more than a just a place to store artifacts it is also a rallying point for the Nordic community.
Visitors to the museum can learn first hand how the Nordic immigrants contributed to the regions cultural and economic makeup. Five separate areas of the museum are demarcated each one representing one of the five Scandinavian countries. The museum primarily focuses in the experiences of Nordic immigrants when they settled down in Seattle’s Ballard region as well as serving as a place to hold exhibitions of Scandinavian art and cultural events. The museums visiting exhibits usually art of renowned Nordic painters is deeply intriguing and is perhaps the most interesting aspect of this little museum.
The first floor of the museum is themed – The Dream of America and explains why Scandinavians chose to leave their homelands and seek greener pastures in the USA. The story begins with a Scandinavian family on their farm and chronicles the journey by sea towards Ellis Island; this truly moving story is effectively told using a mix of pictures, paintings, models and documents.
The second floor describes the experiences of these immigrants in the American North West; it speaks about the logging and fishing industry in the region that provided employment to most immigrants. Various items of traditional clothing, furniture and tools that the immigrants used are preserved and put on display here. The third floor shows the common bond and also the differences between the Scandinavian nationalities and tells the unique story of each nationality in the Pacific North West.
Located in Ballard Seattle this is an interesting attraction that located close to a number of Seattle hotels. Though many hotels in Seattle are mostly situated with in the city and downtown areas, places offering accommodation close to Ballard can also be found.
